Plato's Allegory of the Cave: The fifth film

This movie seems to be the most inaccurate representation of the “ The Allegory of the Cave”. First, this movie seems to be a satire of the allegory. When the man leaves the cave he becomes more knowledgeable by talking to people and gaining new, helpful information. In the film version, the man does not learn what the sun is ,but instead the filmmaker pokes fun with the interaction with the man and the women.
In the film version many parts of the story are left out and changed. First, the two men that are the prisoners constantly converse with one another while the allegory has no interaction; rather the men only watch the wall. While conversing one prisoner tells the other to leave the cave to find out what the light it. Once again in the allegory it is one man’s decision to leave the cave. He does not tell the others nor do they notice his departure. After being outside of the cave, the prisoner decides to return and be chained to the wall with the other man. While the allegory does include the man returning to the cave, he only comes back to persuade others to leave, not to stay.
Since multiple parts of the story are left out and changed, the story has a completely different ending and meaning. In the allegory the prisoner decided on his own to leave and change his life. Once leaving, the man becomes enlightened about the outside world then returns to aid others in achieving a free life and the same education of the real world. The film version does not have the prisoner leave on his own rather he is encouraged by others. When leaving the cave the prisoner should become enlightened, but instead he learns nothing. Lastly, the prisoner does not persuade others to escape from the cave, but returns to his old life.

1. This film obviously is the least accurate portrayl of Plato's allegory of all of the seven posted. It begins with two uninformed men watching the shadows provided by a light source, thus representing the uninformed watching showdows in Plato's allegory. When the "adventurous man" breaks free from the chains, the other suggests to find out where the light comes from, which does not happen within the allegory. This makes it seem like everyone in the cave wants to know where the light comes from, while in Plato's text the people are content with what they see. When the prisoner of the cave leaves, he is in search for the light, but comes up short with answers and only angry people that dont understand him. In the actual allegory the prisoner is enlightened and estatic to share his knowledge with the others, while in the video, the prisoner is disgruntled and has no knowledge except the fact that in the real world there are strange and cranky people.
2. None of Plato's own words are used in this short film, but more of the basic idea of the allegory.
3. The video doesn't really coincide with much of Plato's theory, but has a humorous take on it. Much is left out in the film that is in the allegory. For example: the prisoner does not achieve enlightenment, he realizes the sun is the source of enlightenment, he goes back to tell his friends the truth, his friends don't believe him and kill him...
4. This representtion of Plato's Allegory of the Cave puts a flip side on the real world. What Plato's fails to address in his allegory, is what if the world is a horrible place, then would it be better to stay in the cave and be at peace? Plato only portrays the "real world" as a place of knowledge and expierence, rather than cruelness and confusion as the video depicts. I think the video makes a strong point in noting that Plato urges his students to look into the deep meanings of subjects and be informed and thus happy and knowledgeable, yet it also notes that by looking into the deeper meanings of things you can be depressed or dissapointed.

1.) Images used to represent different aspects of Plato's Allegory are the cat is the shadow on the walls. The two men are chained up by their heads, not their hands. Sounds that are used are some weird kind on like jungle music.
2.) I did not notice any of Plato's acctual texts in this movie. I think that this was just a non serious way to show people the Allegory of the cave.
3.) Believe it or not, I feel this very "stupid" movie does a great job at showing us Plato's theory of the cave. We see the men being chained up then the one guy who gets free. We then see a weird interpretion of the uneducated man trying to figure out what the sun was. finally the man returns to the cave and takes place in a non-civil food-fight. Things that are missing would be the bridge that people were walking on. I dont feel that any of the meaning was taken away from the Allegory by using a non-serious approach. I think it might have helped more "simple minded" people understand what is going on in the story.
4.) The modern meaning i saw was a representation of the world. Some people live very sheltered lives where everything is handed to them, told to them, or done for them. In a way i feel that this is the cave. At some point these people need to grow up and step out of the "cave" and figure out "what that is".

This movie was not accurate at all in depicting Plato's, ''Allegory of the Cave''. There was a brief clip of a cat repesenting a shadow but other than that this movie seemed very uneducated. It seemed as if the actors were mocking Plato and his theory of the cave.
I didn't hear any of Plato's own words used in the film.
This video does in noway whatsoever fully interprets Plato's theory of the cave. It seems like they are portraying and acting out the opposie of Plato's beliefs. Rather then being content with their situation lke Plato would assert, they are very interested in the "what if's"?.
This video is fulll of rude comments and cruel gestures and can not be taken seriously as a depiction of Plato's , "Allegory of the Cave.

This video does not show a strong portrayal of what Plato's "The Allegory of the Cave" is really about. It uses comedy to touch on some of the topics in Plato's work. In the video it seems that the guy leaves because the other man tells him to. Once he gets out into the world he seems to adapt to the world pretty quickly, with his only question being what the sun is? I also understand that it was supposed to be comical, but was the breast scene necessary? Considering if this man knows nothing about the outside world than how does he know he is attracted to breast? When he finally goes back to the cave he seems content. The video doesn't make too much sense considering that the two men seem pretty happy in the cave to begin with. I do not believe that this was a good representation of "The Allegory of the Cave."

1. What images/sounds are used to represent the different aspects of Plato's allegory?

The first sounds you hear make me think of a curious environment. The images are at first the shadow of a dog and a cat. Just like in Plato's allegory the mens heads were chained down. The man could communicate with each other and with other people perfect fine. The opening music sounds a lot like jungle music and seemed to spark curiousity.

2. Does the film use any of Plato's own words? Comment on how these passages are incorporated into the video.

There were none of Plato's words used in this firm.

3. How well does the video interpret Plato's theory of the cave? Are there any aspects of the allegory that the video leaves out? How does this affect the meaning?

I think that the video got the very rough idea of what Plato's Allegory really was. I think they did a poor job exxplaining what happens when the man leaves the cave. They left out everything about the man getting enlightened and telling his friends about what is real. I think by leaving out everything about the enlightenment they completely missed the meaning of the allegory.

4. What kinds of modern meanings are represented?

I think that the movie showed some of the different types of people in the world. I also think the movie hit on how sheltered people can be. They showed mostly bad thing of the world with people just telling him to "piss off".
