Film Series: Plato's Allegory of the Cave

Underneath this post, I have gathered seven different You Tube videos on the topic of Plato's cave. Most, if not all, are student creations. Some are short and pithy; some are loaded with social commentary; others are just a bit silly. In your groups, I'd like you to watch one of the videos and respond to the following questions. You may post your answers as a comment to the video.

1. What images/sounds are used to represent the different aspects of Plato's allegory?
2. Does the film use any of Plato's own words? Comment on how these passages are incorporated into the video.
3. How well does the video interpret Plato's theory of the cave? Are there any aspects of the allegory that the video leaves out? How does this affect the meaning?
4. What kinds of modern meanings are represented?

Have fun watching t.v. for class!

This movie seemed to be the most interpretive of the allegory. Even though it was a cartoon it displayed many of the meanings that we read about. The film opens to the sun, which is said to represent the form of the good. The chained men in the beginning show a correct representation of the men in the cave, but when the shadows are shown the images are made by the men behind the chained prisoners, when in reality, in the allegory, the images are from the people on the bridge being transferred from the raised fire. When the man in dragged up towards the light, it seems as though the person is being forced into the new land of knowledge rather that freely going towards the water and light. The sun refers to the outside of the cave to be the real representation of the world that he is actually living in, and the life that he is living while he is being chained is a false reality. The freed prisoner now can see the actual objects that were being represented in the cave on the wall. The new free man then returns to the cave to tell the men what the real world is like, and then men agree to kill him because of his false stories. I believe that the representation of the end of the allegory is false because it makes a gruesome show of what really happened.
The sounds and images that are used to represent the different aspects of the allegory is the dialogue between the characters, and between the main prisoner and the sun. This dialogue is important because it gives the viewer a description of the objects and images shown in this film. The sounds of the chain and the dragging of the man reinforce the events happening.
I do not believe that there are any modern meanings represented in this film, because it is a cartoon, and we cannot actually see any real images that we would view in our daily lives.

Response to the Fifth Movie:

1. In this video the music that starts off is somewhat mysterious and then the cavemen show up. the cavemen represent the chained characters. There are also shadows of people and animals that pass by, just liked Plato described.
2. This video does not use any of Plato's own words but it does show the curiosity and the desire to discover the light by the cavemen. It represents a more modern take on the passage.
3. This video does not do a terrific job at depicting what went on in The Allegory of the Cave. However, it does capture some of the main themes. These include the chained prisoners of the dark cave, the shadows that ignite the curiosity of the light, the yearning to discover the light, and the return to the cave.
4. The modern meanings that are represented are as follows. One is shown by the surrounding environment with "the Goth kid" which shows one of today's social groups. In addition to this, the cavemen wanted to touch the young lady's breasts which is definetely something that is predominant in modern society.
